This week, we meet Kallie and her Percheron, Baxter. They have been proudly showing off our war bridle during their rides this summer!
–What have you and your horse been up to this summer–preparing for a show, hitting the trails, trying a new sport?
This summer Baxter and I took on a new sport, Mounted Archery. Mounted Archery is a challenging and engaging sport and requires a great deal of trust and confidence in your equine partner. Baxter is excelling at Mounted Archery very quickly and seems to really enjoy himself. Riding a large draft (Percheron) in Mounted Archery is not common, especially one who is 18 hands. Most Mounted Archery horses are between 14 and 16 hands tall so you do not have to shoot down to the targets. Baxter’s height is not holding either of us back at all, I feel we are both growing quickly in the sport and I can’t wait to see what we can do in the future! We participated in a Mounted Archery Clinic earlier this year and will be attending another in August as well as participating in a rein-less riding clinic also in August. We also joined a Mounted Archery club and participate in monthly club practices.
–How did you first meet Baxter?
I purchased Baxter as an 8-month-old, with the thought of training him to be my next all-around show and trail horse. Baxter started going to shows in hand as a yearling and two-year-old and also spent lots of time with me on trails, either with me leading him or ponying him off of another horse. I started sitting on Baxter the fall of his 2-year-old year and started him under saddle as a 3-year-old. He and I have been successfully competing in all-around events at open horse shows as well as trail riding since he was three. I also use him to babysit horses that come to my farm for training and as a pony horse as well as a trail leader when introducing horses to trail riding. Baxter has also dabbled as a lesson horse for a six and ten-year-old girls when he was four (when my lesson horse hurt herself).
What’s your favorite part of your Baxter’s personality?
Baxter has a lot of personality but what I enjoy the most is his willingness to trust me and try new adventures and his loving-ness. He is a complete snuggle bug and loves to be brushed and hugged.
What do you like about the Two Horse gear you got as part of the program?
Baxter and I received the Medieval Baroque War or Parade Bridle made from Beta Biothane. I loved that I could send Two Horse Tack Baxter’s measurements (he has a very large and often hard to fit head) and they sent me a beautifully made bridle that fit him great! The Beta Biothane Bridle is very easy to clean, compliments his face and the reins are easy to grip. I had not previously worked with Beta Biothane and was impressed with the softness and flexibility it has. Baxter gets lots of compliments on his bridle and I love how it opens up conversations with people I don’t know about Beta Biothane gear from Two Horse Tack. And the style makes Baxter look super cool!!!
